The Čerchov hill is the highest peak of the Czech Forest. It is situated only two kilometres from the German border. A wooden observation tower was built in 1894, however, thousands of tourists and severe climate meant that it did not survive very long. A new one, made of brick this time, was built 9 years later. Its existence was not a happy one, though. First, right before World War II the Germans took over the border area and later the Communists made it inaccessible to the public. It was opened again in 2000.
